The International Criminal Court’s Internship

The International Criminal Court’s Internship and Visiting Professional Programme offers exciting opportunities for university graduates and professionals from States Parties and non States Parties.

Objectives and purposes of the programme

The programme will give participants the opportunity to work in the Court’s stimulating multicultural environment on projects related to their expertise and interests. In particular, the programme will enable them to develop a deeper understanding of how the Court operates and the challenges it faces. Visiting professionals will be able to complement their expertise at a national or international level with unrivalled experience in the implementation of international criminal justice offered by the Court’s unique environment.

In return, the Court is looking for intellectual rigour, insight into national practice, demonstrated relevant experience, attention to detail, commitment, honesty, integruty, motivation, crativity and team spirit.

Educational and professional background

The programme is intended to attract highly qualified and motivated individuals from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds related to the Court’s activities. The majority of the positions offered by the programme are of legal nature and the Court welcomes applications from persons with a background in international criminal law, public international law, international humanitarian law, human rights, private international law, comparative law, criminology, international relations or legal expertise in violence. However, the Court also has a strong interest in attracting potential interns and visiting professionals with a solid background in areas like political science, journalism, translation and interpretation, information technology, communication, logistics, human resource management, psychology and economics.

General description

Internships: The Court is looking for young candidates with an outstanding academic record, from various countries around the world, to serve as interns in the Court’s organs.

Visiting professional placements: The Court aims to attract applications from experienced professionals with expertise in relevant areas for placements in four organs of the Court, the Presidency, Chambers, the Office of the Prosecutor and the Registry, which are participating in the programme. Interns can work of the organs for a period of 3 to 6 months and the duration of visiting professional positions is 1 to 3 months.

Funding

The Internship and Visiting professional programme has received financial support from the European Commission, States Parties such as Canada, Finland, the Netherlands and Norway, as well as from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundantion and the Open Society Institute. These generous contributions enable the Court to pay a monthly stipend of  EUR 950 to cover costs of living in The Hague and emergency medical insurance. The Court also covers transport costs (economy class return ticket from and to the country of residence) for selected candidates. The Court also welcomes applications from prospective candidates who have secured the necessary funding to cover their stay at the Court.
